A delightful Southern cocktail: Julep's mint julep

Good Morning, RVA

This'll hit the spot...

With temperatures dropping to more tolerable levels, it's time to resume our regularly scheduled porch sits here in Richmond. And why not kick the Southern gentility up a notch with a cool mint julep served in a sweet silver cup?

Here's a great recipe for this sure-to-please cocktail, courtesy of none other than <a href="http://rvanews.com/eats/julep-s-new-southern-cuisine" style="color: #74AD20;text-decoration: none;font-weight: normal;">Julep's New Southern Cuisine</a>...

Ingredients:

  • Equal parts granulated sugar and hot water
  • Fresh mint
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 ounces Makers Mark Bourbon (or Jim Beam Black, whatever your preference)
  • Silver julep cup

Procedure:

  1. Combine sugar and hot water to make a simple syrup.
  2. Fill julep cup with 1 ounce of the simple syrup and several sprigs of mint. Muddle these together.
  3. Add two ounces of bourbon and stir.
  4. Top with ice, add a mint sprig, and serve.

If you're looking to get the kids in on the fun, crush 1 spring of mint into a glass, toss in a teaspoon of sugar syrup, a teaspoon of lemon juice, a couple ounces of cola to taste, and serve over ice.

Enjoy!

(The RVANews staff would like to take this opportunity to remind you to please drink responsibly. Besides, mint juleps are best enjoyed in a leisurely fashion, so just stay put and enjoy yourself.)
